Yarn Flowers with a Flower or Round Loom
It is no secret that I love a good pom pom. Like, I really, really love pom poms. It isn’t often that I find something to make that I love as much as a pom pom, but these yarn flowers might be right up there! While very easy to make, these yarn flowers also can be used as you would a pom pom: string them on a garland, put them on a wreath, add them to a gift, or attach them to a basket. There are just so many possibilities!
You only need a few basic supplies to make these flowers, and this project is a great way to use up your yarn stash! You can even use bits of fabric, ribbon, string, you name it!
Supplies
Yarn. Any thickness or variety. Thinner yarn works better for the smaller flowers; thicker works better for the larger flowers. You can also use fabric, tulle, ribbon, etc.
A flower loom. I used this one from Amazon because I love the Clover brand. There are cheaper ones available from Amazon as well that are not the Clover brand.
A round loom set. You may already have these on hand from knitting hats. I used this set from Amazon so that I could make a variety of sizes.
A plastic yarn needle. Both of the sets of looms I bought came with a plastic needle, but if you need one, this two pack is cheap and great.
Fabric Stiffener. This is optional, but as you make larger flowers, they will be floppy. I added a little fabric stiffener to help them hold their shape.
How To
I created a little video to help show the process of creating these flowers. It is really simple! You will be winding your yarn around the pegs of your loom in a clockwise manner. A few tips and tricks:
You can skip pegs to have fewer petals on your flower.
Double up your yarn by going around the loom again to add a little more body.
Use hot glue to stick flowers to a rope or thicker string for a garland. Because you want these to face forward and not face downward, you will want to apply glue to the top part of the flower. They are a little heavy and want to droop down. This will help.
Use fabric stiffener to stiffen your flowers. Two coats is usually perfect. Larger flowers may even need to have stiffener applied to the front and back.
Thick yarn won’t work well on the small flower looms. Even if you can get it to wrap around without sliding off, the end result just won’t look very flower-like.
Thinner yarn will be floppier so you will probably need to add body by going around the loom several times, and you will probably need a little fabric stiffener as well.
Now that you have your pile of flowers, you can use them everywhere! When you need to add a little pop of color or a little hint of spring, grab some of these flowers! I think you will love the process, and I think you’ll end up with a whole pile of them before you know it!
