I love reading. Like really love reading. I am reading at least three books at all times: one audio book to listen to, one actual book or ebook, and one book that I’m reading with my kids. I was a 7th grade English teacher in my pre-kids life, and my love for reading even became part of my career. While browsing in Anthropologie a few weeks ago, I came across a super cute tasseled bookmark. I thought it was darling, but I didn’t really want to pay the $15 for a bookmark. I realized that it was something I could totally recreate at home! And you can too!

Materials

Faux Leather Fabric - I bought mine from Hobby Lobby in a spool. I bought some mint green and pale pink faux leather and a cheetah print like in the first photo above. Amazon actually has a good selection of faux leather, like the set HERE.
Omegacryl yarn or regular yarn. I love shopping from The Neon Tea Party for my Omegacryl.
Tassel Maker or Cardboard for wrapping a tassel. I love the one that came in my Boye pom pom & tassel maker set. I bought mine from Amazon. And as an added bonus, this set comes with a giant pom pom maker that I use all the time!
Rotary Cutter and mat, like this set.
Ruler. A clear sewing ruler is awesome because it is long and heavier.
Fabric Glue. I found fabric glue worked best with the thinner cheetah fabric, but it didn’t work as well with the faux leather. I bought the glue above from Hobby Lobby, but any fabric glue, like this one, should work.
Large metal yarn needle. Like these.
Hot Glue. This works best for gluing the faux leather fabric.
Scissors.
Yarn or other trim for tying on the tassel.

How To

Double up your fabric, and cut with a rotary cutter. You can measure any width of book mark you would like. I made mine and inch wide. The fabric came 8 inches long, and I kept the length as is. You will need to hold your fabric firmly in place so that you can cut through both pieces of fabric at a time.

Glue the two pieces together. For the lighter fabrics like my cheetah fabric, I used fabric glue, but for this thicker faux leather, I used hot glue.

Make your tassels. I wanted a double tassel, so I made two small tassels. I love this tassel maker (link to it is in the materials section above) because it keeps your tassels the same length. Your tassels should look something like this when you are done. I only tied around one of the tassels (the purple string) because the second will be the bottom tier and it won’t be seen.

Now it’s time to put it all together. I found that I liked the look and the ease in stringing the needle of regular acrylic yarn for the string to tie the tassels to the bookmark. Make sure your bookmark glue is dry before you begin stringing through it. Double up your yarn on your needle for extra strength.

Knot the ends of your doubled up yarn. Insert your needle into the center of the bottom of your bottom tiered tassel. Pull the yarn through to the knot.

Now string through your top tassel, by going through the center from the bottom. Slide tassel down so that it is sitting on the bottom tassel.

Leaving about a half inch from the top of the bookmark, insert your needle (be careful! the faux leather can be tough to get through!) and pull your yarn through.

Decide how far you want your tassels to hang down. I left about an inch and a half. Then double knot your yarn to the bookmark. Trim the yarn and needle off.
